Romy and Kash Meet Xan at Valkyrie

Of Fates & Fables (The Complete Series)

Romy and Kash Meet Xan at Valkyrie is the investigation’s decisive expansion from a family mystery into evidence of an organized werewolf operation. Summoned by a note that reads “Valkyrie. 10 p.m. Come alone,” Romy recognizes that the meeting may explain the paper Otto Montgomery carried on the night he died. She and Kash return to Valkyrie, the same trendy brick building where Romy first saw Kash, but now approach it as investigators seeking the last person known to have seen Otto alive.

The Summons and the Return to Valkyrie

The meeting begins with uncertainty and danger. Romy finds the note among a pile of papers and recognizes the handwriting, while the circumstances make the invitation suspicious: the message directs her to Valkyrie at a fixed hour and orders her to come alone. Instead, she travels with Kash, whose presence turns the appointment from a solitary summons into a guarded confrontation. Talia is also involved in the preparations, and Kash relies on intelligence that Xan comes to Valkyrie every Sunday.

The return carries emotional and investigative weight because Valkyrie is not merely a neutral meeting place. In daylight, the building appears ordinary and gives no visible sign of the secrets associated with its shadows, yet Romy remembers it as the place where her life first changed through her encounter with Kash. The contrast between the unassuming exterior and the supernatural knowledge concealed inside establishes the scene’s central pattern: familiar public spaces contain a hidden conflict that ordinary institutions have failed to recognize.

When Romy and Kash enter, Professor Higgins rises from a brown leather couch and greets Romy by name, saying that he has heard she was looking for him. He introduces himself as Xan and immediately confirms that the summons was deliberate. The encounter therefore begins not with a chance discovery but with a controlled disclosure by someone who already knows more about Romy, Kash, and Otto than he has previously revealed.

Xan’s Identity and His Connection to Kash

Xan’s recognition of Kash produces the first major reversal. He identifies him as Montgomery and explains that they have met before, although Kash was too young to remember. His sympathy for Otto’s death makes Kash defensive, especially because Xan’s familiarity suggests that Otto’s life contained relationships Kash never fully understood. Xan then reveals that he and Otto were close friends for a long time and that he has spent the previous months investigating what may have happened to him.

The more intimate revelation follows: Xan was present when Otto and Lina Montgomery met, served as Otto’s best man, and is actually Kash’s godfather. Kash had been told only that his godfather was his father’s college friend, Andrew. The difference between the family’s partial account and Xan’s full identity shows how thoroughly Otto’s secret relationships had been concealed. Xan is not simply an informant with a useful clue; he is a missing link in Kash’s family history and a living witness to the world Otto kept separate from the Somerville pack.

Xan’s identity also explains why Otto trusted him with dangerous information. Xan is not a werewolf but a huntsman, a member of a group whose purpose is to protect humans from shifters who go rogue. He describes huntsmen as wary allies rather than automatic enemies of werewolves. Their races are separated by suspicion, yet Otto rejected the prejudices between them. Because Otto feared that the werewolf council would object to a pack cooperating with a huntsman, the friendship remained secret for years.

The Huntsmen and the Hidden Investigation

The meeting establishes the distinctive abilities and risks of Xan’s profession. Huntsmen possess exceptional strength, speed, and senses in battle, and their magic blades are bonded to their souls. As long as the bond remains intact, a huntsman does not age, although he can still be killed in combat. The blades make huntsmen especially dangerous to rogue wolves, while also explaining why werewolves would regard them with unease.

Xan’s investigation began when he passed through the area the previous year and noticed an increase in werewolf activity. The local pattern was abnormal. Werewolves in the region were generally born rather than bitten and nearly all belonged to the Somerville pack, with only occasional lone wolves traveling through. During Xan’s later visit, however, he found an abundance of newly turned, bitten wolves. That discovery contradicted the practices of the Somerville pack and suggested that another power was creating werewolves outside the accepted order.

Otto had already tried to investigate the new wolves. Each time he came close to tracking them, they disappeared without a trace. He even appealed to the council, but the council did not act because he lacked sufficient evidence. Xan therefore undertook the pursuit himself, using a huntsman’s unparalleled ability to track werewolves. The scene makes the failure of official authority part of the mystery: the danger is not invisible because no one can perceive it, but because the institutions responsible for responding to it demand proof while the evidence is being deliberately erased.

The Brody Harrison Lead and Otto’s Death

Xan concludes that magic is involved, which means that a witch must also be connected to the operation. He searches for the person responsible and eventually locates an address, but the site has already been abandoned. Nothing identifiable or magical remains. The emptiness is itself evidence of preparation and concealment: whoever operated there had time to remove the traces that might expose the work.

The abandoned location nevertheless yields one concrete lead, a truck registered to Brody Harrison. That discovery links the unexplained bitten wolves, the missing magical operator, and Brody’s activities. Xan sends Otto a note asking him to meet at Valkyrie so he can provide Brody’s name. Otto never arrives. Xan initially assumes that pack business has delayed him, only learning several days later that Otto has died.

The revelation changes the meaning of the meeting and of Otto’s final movements. The note is no longer an isolated personal message; it belongs to an investigation that Otto was actively pursuing. His death occurred before Xan could deliver the name that might have connected him to the newly turned wolves. Romy’s recognition of the handwriting allows her and Kash to recover a chain of intent: Otto was expected at Valkyrie, Xan was waiting to report his findings, and Brody Harrison had already appeared at the end of the tracking trail.

Consequences and Narrative Significance

The encounter gives Kash both a personal witness and a structural explanation for his father’s secrecy. Xan confirms that Otto’s death was connected to his attempt to investigate an abnormal population of bitten wolves, while his relationship to Lina and Kash proves that Otto’s hidden alliance was longstanding rather than opportunistic. Kash’s grief consequently becomes inseparable from the wider struggle over werewolf territory, pack legitimacy, and the forces operating outside the Somerville pack’s rules.

The meeting also supplies the early investigative foundation for the later revelation of Brody’s breeding operation and territorial ambitions. At this point, Xan cannot yet provide the complete conspiracy, and the witch has escaped before leaving identifiable evidence. What he can provide is more dangerous than a complete explanation: a pattern of newly turned wolves, a failed appeal to the council, a vanished magical site, a truck bearing Brody’s name, and Otto’s death immediately before the information could be delivered.

For Romy, the scene demonstrates how knowledge is gained through relationships that official systems have ignored or concealed. She helps connect Otto’s paper to Xan’s summons, travels with Kash despite the instruction to come alone, and remains present as Xan’s testimony transforms the case. The public world continues to look ordinary, but beneath it lie secret pack laws, huntsmen’s blades, magic, and a conspiracy capable of making victims disappear. Valkyrie becomes the threshold at which those hidden systems finally become legible, and the investigation acquires a concrete adversary in Brody Harrison.
